Greatest Threats to this Continent
Because of the location and number of countries that encompass this continent, the environmental issues can feel abundant. Almost all Asian countries struggle with clean water (despite being surrounded by it) that stems from lack of infrastructure/waste management and leads to heavy pollution. Trash is discarded into rivers and lakes, the same rivers and lakes that provide water for all surrounding villages & cities. In addition, a large number of Asian countries believe in traditional/Eastern medicine recipes that include highly endangered animal species. A lack of education in smaller towns & villages make it incredibly difficult to wean people off of these medicines that offer no benefit outside of centuries old traditions.
How You Can Help
With abundant issues come abundant solutions! First and foremost, you can help by simply not participating in excessive waste living. Did you know that a large portion of US waste is actually shipped overseas to Asian countries, specifically China? So in addition to battling their own waste, they’re dealing with ours too. By lowering your daily waste, you can make a massive long-term impact on countries in Asia.
You can also help by educating those around you to the threats of traditional medicine on endangered species. It still shocks me how many people here in the US don’t realize that a rhino horn is made of keratin (the same as your fingernail) so if we can’t manage to find this information out, it’s almost impossible for a small village tucked away in central China without internet, electricity, or running water to know that. Make a point to educate yourself first and then share what you’ve learned to all who will listen.
